Why Organic Rose Gardening?

Organic rose gardening isn’t really a new thing, though there are a growing number of rose gardeners who are choosing to return to this traditional method of growing roses. For most of human history, organic gardening was the only sort of gardening anyone did; it’s only with the development of chemical fertilizers, herbicide's and pesticides that non-organic gardening even began.

Organic gardening means not only healthier, more beautiful roses, but also better health. You’ll be preventing your family and pets from being exposed to often harmful chemicals.

Roses are like the rest of the natural world; they don’t really need our help to grow. For millions of years, plants and animals have gotten along quite well without our assistance. When humans assume that they can improve on nature, problems tend to occur.

Plants are capable of taking care of themselves. Their leaves take care of turning sunlight into energy through the process of photosynthesis. Their roots absorb the water and nutrients the plant needs from the soil. Soil naturally contains worms and microorganisms which break down decaying organic matter into the compounds which plants need.

Growing roses organically is easy and inexpensive. You can save on the cost of the artificial chemical products and use natural fertilization and pest control methods. If the soil in your garden needs a little additional nutritional value for your roses, you can also provide this.

Composting allows you to create your own natural fertilizer for your roses. You can begin your own compost pile using organic waste such as plant clippings, leaves, coffee grounds and fruit and vegetable peels. As these elements decay, they’ll produce compost which contains essential nutrients for your plants.

It’s not hard to compost. You can compost in a container or just start a compost heap in your yard. All you have to do is to stir it periodically to ensure that it continues to decay evenly.

Organic rose gardening doesn’t require artificial pesticides; you can largely rely on nature to keep insect pests under control. Natural predators are often sufficient to keep pests from seriously damaging your garden – but when you use chemical pesticides, you can kill these friendly insects as well as the pests.

Gardeners should be happy to see wasps and ladybugs in their garden as well as lizards, birds and snakes. All of these animals will keep insect pests under control. However, if you’re finding the efforts of these predators insufficient to keep pests to a minimum, you can use natural organic pesticides. These products are widely available and are non-toxic.

Many of these natural pesticides can even target just one specific pest and leave beneficial insects unharmed.

You don’t have to use artificial chemicals to grow great roses with large, fragrant and beautiful blooms. Organic rose gardening involves the gardener spending their time working on their garden rather than spending money on chemical fertilizers or pesticides. When you see those roses you’ve grown organically, you’ll be glad you decided to return to the natural way of gardening.
